Yes, we hear it all the time – dogs can become picky eaters! But did you know that most of the time it’s avoidable and can be corrected? Unfortunately, us human counter-parts are usually the problem. Let me explain!

Reason #1

One of the main reasons dogs become picky eaters are because they are grazers, meaning they have a bowl of food that sits out all day and they nibble periodically throughout the day. For some dogs grazing isn’t an issue, but for a lot of dogs it can cause bad eating habits. Plus, grazing makes it difficult to track how much they are eating.

Our suggestion is to measure out your pet’s food and divide it into two meals, morning and evening.

Reason #2

Another reason for picky eating?Too many treats. Yes, we all love to see the excited expression on our pet’s face when we mention treats or dangle one in front of them. However, most pets would much rather have the treats versus their main food. I mean, why eat a carrot when you can have potato chips, am I right?

Nipping this problem in the bud is pretty easy – just reduce the amount of treats. Even completely skip them for a few days. If you are in the middle of training your dog you can use their kibble as a treat. For the most part, if it’s coming from your hand they think it’s special.

Reason #3

We switch up our pet’s food too often. Our dogs will eat what’s in front of them if they’re given no other choice. The only reason you need to switch up foods is if your pet has allergies. Often times we wait at our pet’s beck and call, assuming they are bored and we must change their food every month. You want to avoid that. It makes eating more difficult on your dog’s digestive system and on you.

Animals that eat raw are rarely “picky”. That’s why it’s a good idea to switch your dog to a raw diet or choose a high-quality kibble and stick to it. Remember, when switching your dog’s diet to transition slowly to prevent stomach upset.

Reason #4

Your pet may have allergies or an intolerance to the food your feeding. Typically seen with kibble, dogs and cats have difficulties digesting dry dog food, which can cause a compromised immune system, itchy or yeasty skin, and excess body odor. In this case, you should figure out the ingredient triggering these symptoms and find a kibble without these ingredients, or go with a raw diet. Dogs commonly on raw diets don’t have adverse reactions to their food.

If you have a picky eater, stop what you’re doing and follow our tips! It will better your life and your pet’s life. It might take some time, but it’s well worth it!
